Sunday Legislative Developments in Europe

There is a very interesting development currently underway in Europe regarding a "work free Sunday." At this point, the matter has been introduced into the European Parliament as an initiative. If a majority of signatures can be obtained before May 7, 2009, then it will be adopted as an official act of the European Parliament. The written declaration promotes the adoption of the initiative on the grounds that it will bring "social" benefits by protecting family time, and also safeguarding the health of workers.

Even though this initiative is not based upon religious grounds, we should take note that it is being welcomed by and posted on the COMECE website. COMECE is an acrostic standing for Commissio Episcopatuum Communitatis Europensis, or the Commission of the Bishops' Conferences of the European Community. It is made up of Bishops delegated by the Catholic Bishops' Conferences of the European Union with a permanent Secretariat in Brussels. CLICK HERE to read the article on their website.
